Daily challenge 2025

Happy new year! Having wrapped up last year’s challenge in yesterday’s post, today is all about the coming year instead.

I’m going to draw again in 2025. I do not feel like I’ve finished exploring it (and who knows, maybe I never will!), and I’m enjoying the process of learning mixed with things I’m proud to have produced. So we’ll keep going on that path, but I’m going to refine it a little this year. Not in terms of subject, and mostly not in terms of materials either. Just some small tweaks to the scale of the project, to try to avoid the slight lethargy that hit towards the end of the year.

This year I aim to follow these rules:

  • Draw or paint something no less than 4 days out of every rolling 7. I can do more, but equally I can skip some days without feeling guilty.
  • The absolute minimum is a 5 minute figure sketch. I think I’m also going to define a maximum of 90 minutes – I’m not a pro, I have a lot of things to fit in to my limited spare time. Limiting the maximum duration might just help.
  • I will not buy any more inks, paints, pencils or pens. I have some nice stuff to be working with already, I need to explore it all properly. I may buy new paper (or sketchbooks) or possibly a new paintbrush if I have reached a point where I understand what I’d use it for.
  • I’m going to try to get to another life drawing session (maybe this Wantage one?) and join the Urban Sketchers Oxford on their Saturday trips in June and July.

Hopefully 2025 will be a year of health, growth, and happy drawing!
