Must be Spring, we’ve just been to WCAGS again. (I’ll definitely do a write up this time, for sure, but right now it’s just the pre-meet info.)
The other thing that means is that I’ve been busy in the garden. I love my garden, but honestly I far and away prefer sitting in it and/or watching it to working in it. This means I try to limit my spurts of gardening work to specific times of the year… Even more precisely, probably only for a few weekends in March-April (although there’s normally a little bit of tree-chopping a bit earlier than that).
The garden is getting on for 7 years old now, and everything has really filled out. It’s at the stage now where it needs me to be a bit more brutal, to try and keep the balance of the plants right. That has meant an awful lot of chopping.
Really, a lot of chopping. We took an awfully large amount down to the dump last weekend, and I’ve got my eye on a few more things yet – although nothing as urgent as the things I’ve already done.
I’ve also had a rethink about the lawn. Clarkie wanted the lawn to be a thing of beauty, which honestly takes a lot of work and time that neither of us has. Unfortunately this means the lawn has become full of moss and various other weeds, and a few holes where a ‘leaves the grass living’ weed killer did not, in fact, leave the grass living. So after Clarkie finally gave in to my suggestion, I spent a significant amount of time last weekend raking it (I hate raking lawns) before over-sowing it with white clover. I think the clover will help it stay green, and the nitrogen fixing should help the remaining grass. I think a few daisies, some dandelions and maybe some of the clover flowering could make it look nice and be good for bees too, so that would be a win.
Of course, now I have to wait for the clover to germinate. And hope that the pigeons don’t discover a taste for the seed. And try and weed out the thistles without leaving massive holes. But it’s a plan.
What else? We planted new potatoes in our pots again this year – no photos yet, they still just look like empty pots. I’ve sown my window ledge crops for this year, with hopefully more basil and maybe even some outdoor tomatoes. I’ve replanted the bed in front of that cherry tree above, but haven’t taken a picture yet. The front garden has been tidied. We hacked down the rose next to the conservatory, and the blackbirds have once again built a nest on top of the bird box.
So busy times! But I’m pretty close now to just sitting and watching the flowers grow. My favourite.
