Recently I came across the concept of a ‘now’ page – a page that lets people know what’s going on with you right now. Kind of like the answer you’d give someone you’ve not seen for a while when they say ‘so, what’ve you been up to?’. It’s not quite the same as the about page.
I quite like the idea. So, where are we at?
Well, we’re still in Didcot. We’ve been here just over 7 years at this point, and it suits us. Which is good, because we’ve taken advantage of the current ridiculously low interest rates to fix our mortgage for longer than normal, so technically we’re stuck here for a while!
I now work for Automattic, who are a deliberately fully remote company so it doesn’t actually matter where I live. I’ve been working there for a little over 2 months now, I think, and it’s a big, old (in code terms), fun chunk of code to be learning about. Not a lot of chance of it being scrapped and rewritten either, and potential to inconvenience a lot of people if I screw up. Good times! Looking forward to travel restrictions being eased eventually, so I can actually meet people in person.
Outside of that, I guess the thing I’m working for hardest at the moment is my black belt in taekwondo. Grading is end of October, so it’s a bit focussed at the moment. I’ve been a black stripe for over 2 years now, so thanks pandemic for that. I’ve still got a bunch of long term sewing projects on the go, and plenty of other stuff swirling, just not enough energy to do it all and spending too much time playing stupid games on my phone.
Clarkie and I have been together 17 years now. Yes, that does sound like a large number. It both does and doesn’t feel like it!
After a rough few jobs in the IT sector, Clarkie decided to jack it in and go on a carpentry course this summer, which went pretty well. Then she decided to hit the ground with her shoulder, and the ground won. The carpentry thing will happen, just perhaps more slowly than she’d hoped. In the meantime, she’s taken a job at Hadden Hill Golf Club in the pro shop. Just part time, and it pays exactly as well as you’d think, but so far she’s loving it, and after the last however many years that’s worth everything. The carpentry can be built up around the pro shop job, and who knows where either will lead?
She’s still loving her golf, and the new job is giving her lots of opportunity. We’ll see what the winter brings, but so far so good.
So, that’s the bare bones overview of where we’re at, right now. It’ll change in ways I can’t predict, but right now? It’s all pretty good. And that’s not bad!
